Plugins

On its own, QGIS is a fairly bare-bones program that can do basic GIS-y things, but certainly not all the things that proprietary software can do. Plugins extend the functionality of QGIS. Plugins are free and open-source, just like QGIS!

Plugins are written by QGIS developers and other independent users who want to extend the core functionality of the software. These plugins are made available in QGIS for all the users.

In the menu bar, click Plugins > Manage and Install Plugins... Type the plugin name (or a keyword) into the search bar, highlight the plugin, and click Install Plugin.

There are many plugins available for handling special data formats, managing tabular data, performing analysis, creating time-based animations, and interfacing with other programs. Some of the plugins we will use today include:

  • HCMGIS

  • Standard Deviation

  • D3 Data Visualization

  • Processing R Provider (Advanced not required!)

  • QGIS Resource Sharing
